lead mare
Front horse, female
A lead mare is the dominant female horse in a herd, responsible for guiding the group to food, water, and safety.
Despite popular focus on stallions, wild horse herds typically follow an experienced mare rather than the breeding male: The lead mare moved the herd away from the approaching storm.
The term extends to women who take charge in group settings.
