maraschinos
Bright red cherries
Maraschinos are cherries preserved in flavored syrup, typically bright red and used as garnishes in cocktails and desserts: a Manhattan topped with a maraschino, ice cream sundaes with whipped cream and maraschinos.
The name comes from marasca cherries, originally used to make maraschino liqueur, though modern versions are usually made from other cherry varieties and artificial coloring.
