mammy

Child's maternal term

Mammy is a child's word for mother, now old-fashioned or dialectal.

In American history, mammy specifically referred to a Black woman who nursed or raised white children in slaveholding households.

The "mammy" stereotype—a heavyset, nurturing, devoted Black servant—became a racist caricature in popular culture, appearing on products and in films like *Gone with the Wind*.

The term is offensive when applied to Black women generally.
