mammies
Informal term, mothers
Mammies is the plural of mammy, a word with two distinct uses.
In informal or dialectal speech, mammy means mother, especially in Irish and Southern American English: Give your mammy a kiss.
Historically, mammy also referred to a Black woman employed as a nursemaid to white children in the American South—a figure romanticized in racist imagery that obscured the exploitative reality of such arrangements.
