Yo mama is the opening of a ritualized insult format, short for "your mother." The phrase introduces mock-offensive jokes about the target's mother being fat, ugly, stupid, or otherwise deficient: Yo mama so fat she has her own zip code.
The tradition of trading escalating maternal insults—also called "the dozens" or "playing the dozens"—has roots in African American verbal culture.
