tympani
Copper bowls, stretched heads
Tympani are large kettle-shaped drums tuned to specific pitches, used in orchestras and concert bands.
The singular is tympanum or timpano, though tympani often serves for both.
A tympanist adjusts the drum's tension to produce different notes: The tympani thundered during the finale.
Also spelled timpani, which is now more common.
