madrassahs

Quranic teaching institutions

Madrassahs are Islamic schools, ranging from elementary religious instruction to advanced theological seminaries.

The term comes from Arabic for "place of study." In Western media, madrassahs often appear in discussions of radical Islam, though most simply teach Quranic recitation, Arabic, and Islamic law alongside secular subjects.

Also spelled madrasas or medressas.
