madrassah

Quranic teaching institution

A madrassah is an Islamic school, typically focused on religious instruction including study of the Quran, Arabic, and Islamic law.

The word comes from Arabic for "place of study." In Western media, madrassah sometimes carries connotations of radical indoctrination, though most are ordinary religious schools comparable to parochial schools in other traditions.

Also spelled madrasa, madrassa, or medrese.
