Dhikr

Islamic meditative chanting

Dhikr is an Islamic devotional practice involving the rhythmic repetition of the names of God or sacred phrases, intended to bring the worshipper into a state of spiritual remembrance and closeness to the divine.

The practice ranges from quiet, meditative recitation to ecstatic group ceremonies with chanting, breathing exercises, and movement—the whirling of Sufi dervishes being the most famous example.

The congregation gathered for dhikr after evening prayers.
