iwan
Open-fronted vaulted hall
An iwan is a vaulted hall or space walled on three sides, with one end entirely open—a signature element of Islamic architecture.
Iwans typically face onto a courtyard and serve as grand entrances or gathering spaces in mosques, madrasas, and palaces: The four iwans of the mosque faced the central courtyard.
The form originated in ancient Persia and spread throughout the Islamic world.
