fräulein

Young German woman

Fräulein is a German word for an unmarried woman or young lady, roughly equivalent to "miss." It was once the standard form of address for unmarried women in German-speaking countries but has fallen out of favor, now considered old-fashioned or condescending—much as English speakers moved away from addressing adult women as "Miss." In English contexts, it appears in period pieces or when evoking Germanic settings: The fräulein brought us our drinks.
