lower-case
Small letter format
Lower-case refers to the small form of letters, as opposed to capitals: a, b, c rather than A, B, C.
The term comes from printing, where compositors stored small letters in the lower of two type cases.
As a verb, to lower-case is to convert text to small letters: The editor lower-cased all the shouting headlines.
Also spelled lowercase.
