setline

A setline is a fishing line anchored at both ends, left unattended with multiple baited hooks along its length.

Unlike lines requiring a rod and reel, setlines work passively—the fisher returns later to check for catches.

They're used in commercial fishing and by recreational anglers targeting catfish or other bottom-feeders: We ran the setlines at dawn.
