lock-down

Mandatory stay indoors

A lock-down is a security protocol confining people to a location during an emergency—a school lock-down during a shooting threat, a prison lock-down after a riot.

The word gained wide currency during the COVID-19 pandemic for government-imposed restrictions on movement and business: The city went into lock-down for three months.

Also spelled lockdown.
