load bearing wall
Weight-carrying partition
A load bearing wall is a wall that supports weight from above—typically the roof, upper floors, or both.
Unlike partition walls, which merely divide spaces, load bearing walls are structural and cannot be removed without risking collapse or requiring alternative support.
The contractor confirmed it was a load bearing wall, so we'd need a beam to open up the kitchen.
