little green man

Extraterrestrial visitor archetype

Little green men are imaginary extraterrestrial beings, typically depicted as small humanoids with green skin.

The phrase emerged from mid-20th-century science fiction and became shorthand for alien visitors, often invoked humorously or skeptically: He claims he saw a UFO, but I'm not buying any little green men stories.

The image persists in popular culture despite most fictional aliens now looking quite different.
