lamenting

Mourning a loss

Lamenting is the act of expressing grief, sorrow, or deep regret.

Someone lamenting a loss mourns it openly, often with words or sounds of anguish.

The term applies both to genuine expressions of pain and to more theatrical displays: She spent the evening lamenting her failed relationship.

People also lament things they find regrettable without experiencing true grief: Critics are always lamenting the death of cinema.
