lifebuoys
Thrown flotation devices
Lifebuoys are ring-shaped flotation devices thrown to people in the water to keep them afloat until they can be rescued.
They're standard safety equipment on ships and at pools or beaches.
The term extends figuratively to anything that saves someone from a dire situation: The loan was a lifebuoy for the struggling business.
