liens
Legal property holds
Liens are legal claims against property as security for a debt.
A creditor who holds a lien can prevent the property from being sold until the debt is satisfied: The bank placed a lien on the house.
Tax liens, mechanic's liens, and mortgage liens are common types.
The property owner retains possession but cannot transfer clear title until the lien is released.
