medical isolation

Separated for health

Medical isolation is the separation of a person with a contagious disease from healthy individuals to prevent transmission.

Unlike quarantine, which restricts people who may have been exposed, isolation applies to those confirmed to be infected: The patient was placed in medical isolation after testing positive for tuberculosis.

Isolation protocols vary by disease—some require negative-pressure rooms, others simply a private space.
