leeward side
Away from gusts
The leeward side is the sheltered side of something—a ship, island, or mountain—facing away from the wind.
It's the protected area where wind arrives after passing over or around an obstacle: We anchored on the leeward side of the island.
On tropical islands, the leeward side is typically drier, receiving less rainfall than the windward side that faces incoming weather.
