leatherheads
Thick-skulled fools
Leatherheads is an old nickname for football players, from the leather helmets worn in the sport's early decades.
The term evokes a rougher, less commercialized era of the game: My grandfather played with the leatherheads back in the thirties.
It can also refer to stupid people, playing on the idea of a head made of leather rather than containing a brain.
