lava lake
Crater's fiery pond
A lava lake is a pool of molten rock contained in a volcanic crater or vent.
Unlike lava flows that move and cool, lava lakes maintain their liquid state through continuous heat from below: The volcano's lava lake has been active for decades.
Some persist for years; others form briefly during eruptions.
