latchkey child
Home-alone after school
A latchkey child is a young person who returns home from school to an empty house, letting themselves in with their own key because parents are still at work.
The term emerged in the mid-20th century as more mothers entered the workforce: As a latchkey child, she learned to make her own snacks and do homework alone.
The image suggests self-reliance but also parental absence and potential neglect.
