cryptograms

Puzzles using substitution

Cryptograms are puzzles where letters have been substituted with other letters or symbols, and the solver must decode the hidden message.

The classic newspaper cryptogram presents an encrypted quotation where each letter consistently represents another throughout: if Q stands for E, every Q in the puzzle is an E.

She solved the cryptogram by first identifying the most common letters.

The word also applies more broadly to any text written in code or cipher.
