funeral games
Death-honoring athletic contests
Funeral games are athletic competitions held to honor the dead, a practice from ancient Greece and Rome.
The games for Patroclus in Homer's Iliad are the famous example—chariot races, boxing, wrestling, and other contests staged by Achilles for his fallen companion.
The term now sometimes describes any competitive jockeying that follows a death or downfall: The funeral games for his leadership had already begun.
