goliath

Titan among peers

A goliath is a giant or a person or thing of enormous size and power.

The word comes from the biblical Philistine warrior slain by young David with a sling and stone, making it a byword for imposing but potentially vulnerable opponents.

In modern use, goliath often appears in David-and-Goliath contexts describing an underdog facing a powerful adversary: The startup is taking on the goliaths of the tech industry. (Capitalized Goliath is the biblical figure.)
