jaywalkers
Midblock street crossers
Jaywalkers are pedestrians who cross streets illegally—ignoring traffic signals, crossing mid-block, or otherwise violating right-of-way rules.
The term comes from "jay," early 20th-century slang for a naive rural person unfamiliar with city traffic: Jaywalkers darted between honking cars.
The word carries mild disapproval but little real stigma in practice.
