jab step
Deceptive foot movement
A jab step is a quick, deceptive foot movement in basketball where a player steps sharply in one direction to fake a drive, then pulls back or goes another way.
The move creates space from a defender or tests their reaction: He hit a jab step and pulled up for the jumper.
The term extends to similar feints in boxing and other sports.
