blow-by
Combustion gas escape
Blow-by is a technical term in internal combustion engines for gases that escape past the piston rings into the crankcase during the compression or power stroke.
This leakage reduces engine efficiency and can contaminate the oil.
Excessive blow-by indicates worn piston rings or cylinder walls and is often diagnosed by observing smoke or pressure from the crankcase vent.
The mechanic said the blow-by was a sign my engine needed rebuilding.
