inodes
Unix metadata structures
An inode is a data structure in Unix-like file systems that stores information about a file—its size, permissions, ownership, timestamps, and location on disk—everything except the file's name and actual contents.
Each file has exactly one inode, identified by a number.
When a system runs out of inodes, no new files can be created even if disk space remains: The server crashed because we ran out of inodes.
