inoculants

Disease prevention agents

Inoculants are substances introduced into a system to produce a desired effect—most commonly beneficial microorganisms added to soil or seeds to enhance plant growth.

Agricultural inoculants contain bacteria that help plants absorb nitrogen: Farmers apply inoculants to legume seeds before planting.

The term also applies to materials added to molten metal to modify its structure during casting.
