innertube

Inflatable river float

An innertube is a inflatable rubber tube that fits inside a tire, holding the air that keeps the tire inflated.

Once standard in all pneumatic tires, innertubes have been largely replaced by tubeless designs in cars but remain common in bicycles.

Inflated innertubes also serve as flotation devices for swimming and tubing down rivers: We spent the afternoon floating on innertubes.
