image compression
Reducing photo size
Image compression is a technique for reducing the file size of digital images.
Lossy compression discards some visual information to achieve smaller files—JPEG is the standard format.
Lossless compression preserves all original data but achieves less reduction—PNG works this way.
The tradeoff is always between file size and image quality: The compression artifacts are visible if you zoom in.
