ikon

Venerated Orthodox picture

Ikon is a variant spelling of icon, used especially for religious images in Eastern Orthodox Christianity—painted panels depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, or saints, venerated as sacred objects.

The spelling with k preserves the Greek origin more visibly.

Outside religious contexts, icon is now standard.
