icequakes

Glacial seismic events

Icequakes are seismic events caused by sudden cracking or movement in ice.

They occur in glaciers, ice sheets, and frozen ground when temperature changes cause rapid expansion or contraction.

The term also describes the cracking sounds heard on frozen lakes and rivers: We heard icequakes all night as the temperature dropped.
