hydrogen chloride

Acidic gaseous compound

Hydrogen chloride is a compound of hydrogen and chlorine (HCl) that exists as a colorless gas with a sharp, irritating odor.

When dissolved in water, it forms hydrochloric acid.

The gas is used industrially in chemical synthesis and can cause severe respiratory damage if inhaled: Hydrogen chloride fumes escaped from the damaged tank.
