horse-chestnut

Conker-bearing tree

A horse-chestnut is a large deciduous tree with distinctive palmate leaves and showy white flower clusters, native to the Balkans but widely planted as an ornamental.

Its seeds—smooth, mahogany-brown nuts encased in spiky green husks—are called conkers in Britain, where children play a game of smashing them together.

Despite the name, horse-chestnuts are unrelated to true chestnuts and are mildly toxic to humans.

Also spelled *horse chestnut*.
