hoecakes

Flat cornmeal bread

Hoecakes are flat cornmeal cakes, a traditional food of the American South.

The name comes from field workers originally cooking the batter on the blade of a hoe over an open fire.

Similar to johnnycakes or corn pone, hoecakes are typically fried in a skillet: Grandma made hoecakes and bacon for breakfast.
