hush puppies
Fried cornmeal balls
Hush puppies are small deep-fried balls of cornmeal batter, a staple of Southern American cuisine often served alongside fried fish or barbecue.
The name supposedly comes from cooks tossing scraps to quiet barking dogs: The catfish platter came with coleslaw and hush puppies. (Capitalized Hush Puppies is the shoe brand.)
