histamines

Immune response molecules

Histamines are compounds released by cells during allergic reactions and immune responses.

They cause the familiar symptoms: itching, swelling, runny nose, watery eyes.

Antihistamines block their effects.

Histamines also regulate stomach acid and act as neurotransmitters in the brain.

Some foods contain histamines or trigger their release: aged cheese, fermented foods, red wine.
