dander

Shed skin particles

Dander is the tiny flakes of skin shed by animals—especially cats and dogs—that trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people: I'm allergic to cat dander.

Separately, to get someone's dander up is to make them angry or irritated, and to get your dander up is to become so.

This dander may derive from dandruff or from a West Indian word for ferment.
