boonies

Far from anywhere

The boonies are remote, rural areas far from cities or civilization—short for boondocks.

The term carries connotations of isolation and lack of amenities: We had to drive out to the boonies to find the cabin.

Originally U.S. military slang from the Philippines, it now appears in casual American speech whenever someone means the middle of nowhere.
