hic
Spasmodic throat sound
Hic is the conventional spelling of a hiccup sound, often repeated to suggest someone is drunk or has the hiccups: Hic! Excuse me.
It appears in comic strips, novels, and anywhere writers represent involuntary sounds phonetically.
The word is purely imitative and rarely stands alone outside dialogue or humorous contexts.
