hiccups

Involuntary breathing interruptions

Hiccups are involuntary spasms of the diaphragm that produce a distinctive gulping sound.

A single episode is a hiccup; the condition itself is also called the hiccups: I've had the hiccups for ten minutes.

Figuratively, a hiccup is a minor setback or glitch: We hit a few hiccups during the launch, but nothing serious.
