hibernacula
Dormant creatures' refuges
Hibernacula is the plural of hibernaculum, a shelter where an animal passes the winter in dormancy.
The term applies to various structures: the underground burrows where reptiles brumate, the winter quarters of bats in caves or mines, or the protective casings that certain aquatic invertebrates form around themselves.
In botany, a hibernaculum is a bud or bulb that overwinters underground.
The cave serves as hibernacula for several bat species.
