circuit courts
Roving judicial bodies
Circuit courts are courts that historically traveled a circuit—judges moving between locations to hear cases in different areas.
In the U.S. federal system, circuit courts now refer to the Courts of Appeals, which hear appeals from district courts within their geographic region: The case was appealed to the Ninth Circuit.
State court systems also use the term, though structure varies by state.
