hand press
Lever-operated printing machine
A hand press is a printing press operated manually rather than by motor or steam power.
The operator pulls a lever or turns a screw to press paper against inked type.
Hand presses dominated printing from Gutenberg through the early nineteenth century and remain in use for fine art printing and letterpress work.
The term also applies to any manually operated pressing device: a hand press for making tortillas.
