chapbooks

Small poetry publications

Chapbooks are small, inexpensive booklets, traditionally sold by peddlers (chapmen) and containing popular literature—ballads, folk tales, political tracts, or religious texts.

The format dates to early modern Europe, when chapbooks brought reading material to common people.

Today the term describes slim, often self-published collections of poetry or short fiction: She sold her chapbook at the reading.
