Flag grief level
Halfmast describes a flag positioned partway down its pole as a sign of mourning or respect for the dead: Flags flew at halfmast after the president's death.
The term extends to anything lowered or drooping: His pants were at halfmast.
Also spelled half-mast.
On land, half-staff is the more formal term in American English.
